Advent 2016: Week 1, Day 2
Advent Family Worship- Day 2
Begin by singing “O Come O Come Emmanuel” or a favorite Christmas song.
Explain the Advent wreath. Our themes this year will be: JOY (week 1); FAITH (week 2); LOVE (week 3); PEACE (week 4).
Light the first Advent Candle and read the “Advent Theme summary” in the worship folder.
The future that Jesus is bringing is described as a Wedding Feast. If you’ve ever been to a wedding, you know that it is a celebration. There is dancing and drinking and smiles all around. That’s what heaven will be like. But here’s the thing. The future party that God will throw will be so great, if you listen really carefully you can already hear the music. Out of nowhere, sometimes when you least expect it, you look down and find your toes tapping to the beat.
Our Advent theme this week is joy. Our hope in the future that awaits us fills our hearts with joy. We light a candle to remind ourselves that soon, when Jesus comes again, everything sad will come untrue. As God has said, “Those who sow in tears, shall one day reap with shouts of joy” (Psalm 126:5).
Read Isaiah 25:6-9 and Revelation 19:6-9 together.
- Q. Have you ever been to a wedding reception? What was it like?
- Q. Why do you think the Bible uses the picture of a wedding reception to describe what heaven will be like? What kinds of things happen at a wedding? What will heaven be like?
- Q. What will we be like in heaven? (Think of a bride!)
- Q. What will our relationship with God be like in heaven? Pray for Jesus to come again soon!
Finish by singing “Come Thou Long Expected Jesus”
