Advent 2015: Week 2, Day 3

Advent Family Worship- Day 3

Begin by singing “O Come Thou Long Expected Jesus”

Light the first Advent candle and ask, “What was our theme from last week?” The answer is faith.

Light the second Advent candle and ask, “What is our theme this week?” The answer is joy.

Read 1 Peter 1:8-9. Pay attention to the way Peter links joy and glory. Have a discussion about how we glorify God in our joy by using the following questions:

[8] Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory, [9] obtaining the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls.

(1 Peter 1:8-9, ESV)

  • Q. “What is the chief end of man?” (This is the first question of the Shorter Catechism The answer is: to glorify God and enjoy him forever. We glorify God in our joy.)
  • Q. What does it mean to enjoy God? What are some ways we can enjoy God?
  • Q. Do you enjoy God? If not, why not?
  • Q. If we find it hard to get excited about spiritual things, what does that mean?
  • Q. How can we get joy? Do you conjure it or do you catch it?

You get joy by getting close to Jesus or by getting close to other people who are close to Jesus. You catch joy the way you catch a cold. It’s like an infection.

Pray using the A.C.T.S. model.

  • Adore God for his love and his power.
  • Confess your lack of joy in God.
  • Give thanks for Jesus. He has come to save us.
  • Ask the Holy Spirit to give you joy and to make you obedient like Mary.

Finish by singing “He Has Come For Us”
