Outline

God is self-existent. The great I AM. The One who is the cause of all but is Himself caused by none. We are derivative of him. Yet, we seek the independence that belongs to God alone. We imagine ourselves as the makers of our lives, instead of the stewards of His gifts.

I. GLORIFYING GOD – i.e. Adoration
God’s name is I AM THAT I AM.

II. GRASPING FOR GODNESS – i.e. Sin
We long to be the I AM.

III. GRACIOUS HUMAN-NESS – i.e. Embracing limits
We are stewards, not owners.

IV. GOSPEL – i.e. Power
Everything is gift!

Discussion Questions

  1. What does God’s name – I AM – mean? Respond to this quote from A.W. Tozer, “That God is everything and man is nothing is a basic tenet of the Christian faith and devotion.”
  2. What happens when we, like Nebuchadnezzar, think of ourselves as the I AM?
  3. What is the difference between living as an owner or a steward - towards your people, your job, your stuff?
