I. THE DOCTRINE: IMPUTED RIGHTEOUSNESS
The word “counted” is repeated 10 times in these verses. What is the significance of this?

II. THE ARGUMENTS: ABRAHAM & DAVID
Paul presents a historical argument (Abraham) and a theological argument (David).

III. THE APPLICATION: NO BOASTING
If salvation is a gift of grace, not a wage, what happens to pride and fear?

Discussion Questions:

1. Read Romans 4:4-5. Paul presents two different types of people. Which are you?

2. If you live your life behaving (i.e. working), what does life feel like? What is the practical effect of all of life being wages? If you live your life believing (i.e. resting) instead of behaving, what does life feel like? What is the practical effect of all of life being a gift? Discuss the difference.

3. We discussed two different types of unbelief: pride and fear. Define both. Which are you most prone towards? In what situations? What triggers?

4. How does being “counted” righteous destroy both pride and fear? Spend time dismantling unbelief with the gospel. Go around the room and do this person by person.
