Death of Death

1 Thessalonians 4:13-14, 18; 5:1-11
Discussion Questions:

  • Where are you lacking courage in your life?
  • Earnest Becker argues that we’re deathly afraid of death and so we spend an inordinate amount of time and energy and emotion in trying to deny death. Do you agree?
  • Why is death so scary? What is the “sting of death”? How does Jesus overcome the sting of death?
  • The apostle Paul says that Christians grieve but also have hope. We don’t deny our sadness. (That’s stoicism, not Christianity.) We don’t dwell in our sadness either. So what does “grieving as those who have hope” look like? Can you give examples from your own life- both how you did this well and how you did it poorly?
  • What would a life free of the fear of death look like? Try to describe it.
